Jesus Christ

"By this, you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God."

1 John 4:2.

To the surprise of some, “Christ” is not Jesus’ last name (surname). “Christ” comes from the Greek word Christos, meaning “anointed one” or “chosen one.” This is the Greek equivalent of the Hebrew word “Messiah.” “Jesus” is the Lord’s human name given to Mary by the angel Gabriel. “Christ” is His title, signifying Jesus was sent from God to be a King and Deliverer. “Jesus Christ” means “Jesus the Messiah” or “Jesus the Anointed One.”

What or how does one become anointed? In the Bible, anointing with oil is performed in religious ceremonies and used for grooming, refreshment, medicinal treatments, and burial traditions. Ceremonial anointing in the Old Testament was a physical act involving the smearing, rubbing, or pouring of sacred oil on someone’s head (or on an object) as an outward symbol that God had chosen and set apart the person (or object) for a specific holy purpose.

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free." Luke 4:18.

Today, let the sacred oil of anointing wash over us, allowing the Father to guide and protect us from the ways of the world. Many can be anointed, but there is a single "Anointed One" who made it possible for all of us. Christology
